Kovalev goes to the police to enlist their help in finding his nose. He then proceeds to insult Kovalev by inviting him to take a pinch of snuff, despite him not having a nose. Kovalev asks the clerk to publish an ad in the paper about the nose, but the clerk says it would ruin the paper's reputation. The porter is the door-keeper by the Commissioner's Office. He recommends putting it in a bottle of spirits and then selling it to him. The doctor is called in to treat Kovalev for his detached nose, but advises him not to reattach the nose. He likes her and thinks she is pretty, but does not wish to marry her. She is a young girl who Kovalev calls upon. Kovalev accuses her of cursing him, but she is innocent. Alexandra GrigorievnaĪlexandra is a wealthy widow and the mother of an eligible young woman who she wants to marry Kovalev. The coachman drives Kovalev in a coach across town in pursuit of the nose.
