Another trait of Jake Spoon's that McMurtry delves into and that is revealed throughout the novel is Jake's admiration of pretty women, particularly pretty prostitutes. This shows a major part of Jake's character. Although by an accident, it was Jake's shrewdness to play on it that has earned him a reputation as much as the accident did itself. He capitalizes on the accident and this gives him his fame. Jake is implied by this passage as to be a man who makes the most out of his circumstances. It was ironic that the shot which finally got him in trouble was as big an accident that had made his fame" (71). When Call and Gus are first discussing Jake's return from his dealings up North, they remember how one lucky hip fire shot changed his life, "Call and Gus always worried about Jake because of his unearned reputation, but he was a lucky fellow and there were not many men dumb enough to enjoy pistol fights, so Jake managed to get by. Jake is a cowboy that has the reputation of being a trouble maker straight from the start of the novel. The sheer number of characters alone can be intimidating, but there are a few characters that play very significant roles in advancing the plot and stand out in many other ways.
